Financial support for single parents in Ireland

If you're a single parent looking for information about payments and support you might be entitled to, One Family is a great place to start: they're Ireland's organisation for one-parent families and their askonefamily helpline can point you towards what's available and answer your questions in a friendly way. They also offer parenting courses and counselling if you need extra support during this time.

In Ireland, support for a parent raising children alone comes in stages that follow your youngest child's age, plus a top-up if you are working. The payments are means tested, which sounds daunting but is simply a look at your income; you can work and still qualify. The Department of Social Protection administers all of these through your local Intreo Centre.

• One-Parent Family Payment is the main payment while your youngest child is under 7; it is means tested, and you can work while receiving it if your income stays within the limits (citizensinformation.ie).
• When your youngest child is aged 7 to 13, Jobseeker's Transitional Payment takes over; unlike ordinary jobseeker payments, you do not have to be available for full-time work, and you can study full time while getting it (citizensinformation.ie).
• If you are employed for at least 38 hours a fortnight, Working Family Payment can top up your wages, and a lone parent can receive it in addition to One-Parent Family Payment (citizensinformation.ie).
• A practical step: apply for One-Parent Family Payment within 3 months of becoming eligible (citizensinformation.ie).
• Many parents do not realise that since June 2024 child maintenance is not counted in the means test, so maintenance paid for your children does not reduce these payments (citizensinformation.ie).
