Benefits and payments for single parents in Northern Ireland

If money is tight after separating in Northern Ireland, you may be entitled to more support than you think. Universal Credit, run here by the Department for Communities, is the main payment for people on a low income.

Northern Ireland has its own social security system, run through local Jobs & Benefits offices, and Universal Credit is its main working-age support. It works much like the rest of the UK but with some sensible local differences in how it is paid, which are worth knowing so your first payment does not catch you off guard while you are settling into a new routine.

• Universal Credit covers living costs, housing, children and childcare in one claim, and in Northern Ireland it is normally paid twice a month rather than monthly, with the first payment arriving about five weeks after you claim (nidirect.gov.uk).
• Help with housing costs is normally paid direct to your landlord each month in Northern Ireland, so do not be surprised if your own payment looks smaller than the total award (nidirect.gov.uk).
• If your partner no longer lives with you, tell Universal Credit straight away; you can report it through your online account, by phoning the Universal Credit Service Centre, or by speaking to your work coach at your local Jobs & Benefits office (nidirect.gov.uk).
• You keep all child maintenance paid to you; it does not affect any of the benefits you claim, though you should still tell your Jobs & Benefits office about the arrangement (nidirect.gov.uk).
