It rolls help with living costs, children, childcare and rent into a single monthly payment, and the amount adjusts to your circumstances. Separation is exactly the kind of change it is built to respond to, so the most important thing is simply to tell it what has happened, promptly.

• Couples who live together must make a joint Universal Credit claim for their household, so when you separate your claim needs to change to reflect that you are now claiming on your own (gov.uk).
• Report the change as soon as it happens by signing in to your Universal Credit account; a delay can mean being paid too much and having to pay it back (gov.uk).
• Child maintenance payments will not affect any benefits you and your children get, including Universal Credit, and you do not pay tax on them (gov.uk).
• Only one person can get Child Benefit for a child, so after separating it is worth agreeing which of you claims it (gov.uk).
• If you are working, Universal Credit can pay back up to 85% of approved childcare costs, and it does not matter how many hours you work (gov.uk).
